Battery: Service and Repair
Removing/Installing

WARNING:

-

Battery acid can cause severe burns. When working with electrolyte always wear goggles, rubber gloves, and apron. If electrolyte is
spilled on skin or clothing, flush at once with large quantities of water. If it gets into eyes, immediately flush with large quantities of water
for several minutes and call a doctor.

Batteries produce explosive gases. Keep flames and sparks away from batteries. Do not smoke near batteries. 

CAUTION:  

-

Disconnecting the battery may cause the base setting Of Electronic, Control Modules having On Board Diagnostic (OBD) (VAG 1551)
capabilities to be erased. This may result in vehicle driveability problems.

Perform OBD function "Basic setting" on Electronic Control Modules having OBD (VAG 1551) capabilities whenever a battery has been
disconnected or replaced during repair.

Battery, removing and installing 

NOTE:  Beginning with model year 1993, battery specifications were changed. The height of the battery was increased from 175 mm (6.9 in.) to 190
mm (7.5 in.).  Batteries that are 175 mm (6.9 in.) high can be replaced with batteries 19O mm (7.5 in.) high.

Removing 

- first remove battery negative cable from negative terminal
- remove battery positive cable from positive terminal

- remove clamping bracket 2 

Installing 

- insert battery into tray, ensuring that lip on battery fits into channel 1 
- install clamping bracket 2 to frame member 4, ensuring that bracket seats properly on front lip of battery

- install bolt 3

tighten bolt to: 20 Nm (15 ft lb)

- install a cover on this style of battery

normal maintenance style battery with vented caps

NOTE:  Reinstall this cover after removal, and replace it if damaged.

The battery cover is designed to prevent electrolyte vapor and water from accumulating during normal vehicle operation. If left uncovered these liquids
can accumulate and spill, damaging components and finish.
