Oxygen Sensor: Testing and Inspection

1. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature (engine oil temperature 276 ° F minimum), idle speed is properly adjusted, no exhaust leaks are

present between catalytic converter and cylinder head and all electrical accessories are turned off.

2. Ensure supply voltage is present in oxygen sensor heater circuit and engine coolant temperature sensor is connected.

3. Connect Sun EPA No. 205 CO tester or EPA approved equivalent to CO receptacle tap tube.

4. Start engine and allow to idle for a minimum of two minutes. Check and record CO content.

5. Disconnect the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator and plug the line. CO value should increase momentarily, then return to its original

value.

6. If CO content increases for a few seconds, then returns to recorded value, oxygen sensor is satisfactory. If not, proceed to step 7.

7. Turn engine off, disconnect oxygen sensor 3-way harness connector, and disconnect the engine speed signal wire.

8. Start engine and ground the disconnected green wire. CO value should increase. If the CO value increases, replace the ECU. If not, check the

wiring to the ECU.
