Electrical - DTC's P1580/P0103 Stored in Memory

Condition

DTCs P1580 (17988) and P0103 (16487) Stored in DTC Memory

01 07 14 Jan. 25, 2007, 2001947, supersedes Technical Bulletin Group 01, number 99-18 dated Oct. 29, 1999 due to inclusion in ElsaWeb.

Technical Background

DTCs P1580 ("Throttle Actuator B1 Malfunction" ) and P0103 (" Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit High Input" ) are stored in DTC memory
simultaneously.

These DTCs may be caused by an attempt to start a vehicle with a dead or low-charged battery (below approximately 7.0 V) and predominantly show up
together on a vehicle with a battery in this condition. This can occur at PDI if battery is not maintained.

Service

If an attempt is made to start a vehicle with a battery charge at approximately 7.0 V (or lower):

-

DTC P1580 (17988) will be stored.

Once DTC P1580 (17988) is stored:

-

If the vehicle is jump-started and driven, the second DTC, P0103 (16487) will be stored.

Tip: Throttle valve angle (when checked in Basic Setting Function 04, display group 098) will be 0 in any throttle valve position.

Once these DTCs have been stored:
If DTCs are erased and throttle body adaptation is not performed, both DTCs will immediately be stored again.

If throttle body adaptation is performed without erasing DTCs, "Error" will be displayed in the diagnostic tester in Display Group 98.

In both cases the vehicle may not start, or may run poorly.

Do not replace any parts for this condition. Perform the following steps in sequence to remove stored DTCs P1580 and P0103:

-

Battery condition must be OK.

-

Charge or replace battery according to Repair Group 27.

With battery condition OK:

-

Connect VAS 5051 or VAS 5052.

-

Erase any stored DTCs.

-

Perform throttle body adaptation (refer to appropriate Repair Group).

-

Erase stored DTCs again.

-

Set readiness code.
