Brake Bleeding: Service and Repair
General Information

Brake system, bleeding (vehicles with and without ABS)

Changing brake fluid

Notes:  
^

Only use new brake fluid conforming to US standard FMVSS 116 DOT 4.

^

Genuine VW/Audi brake fluid conforms to this specification.

^

Brake fluid is poisonous. Do not siphon by mouth.

^

Brake fluid is corrosive and must not come into contact with painted parts.

^

Rinse off spillages using plenty of water.

^

Brake absorbs moisture from the ambient air and must therefore always be stored in airtight containers.

Bleeding
(with brake filling and bleeding tool US 1116)
-

Using suction bottle, remove as much brake fluid as possible from brake fluid reservoir.

-

Connect US 1116 to brake fluid reservoir and switch on.

Open bleeder screws and bleed brake calipers and wheel cylinders in the sequence:

1. Right rear wheel cylinder
2. Left rear wheel cylinder
3. Right front brake caliper
4. Left front brake caliper

Note:  Do not press the horizontal brake pressure regulator lever down when bleeding the brakes on vehicles with a brake pressure regulator.

Attach bleeder bottle hose.

Build-up brake pressure in brake system by pumping brake pedal.

-

With brake pedal held down, open and then close bleeder screw.

-

Release brake pedal.

-

Repeat operation until brake fluid flows with no air present.
