The Engine Control Module (ECM) controls fuel injection, the throttle valve control module, oxygen sensor control, ignition, knock control, EVAP
canister purge regulator valve, engine speed limitation via fuel injectors and fuel pump relay, camshaft adjustment and On Board Diagnostic (OBD)

Special tools and equipment

VAG1551 Scan Tool (ST) with VAG1551/3B cable 

Removing

-

First, print out the old control module identification, and thus also its coding, as follows:

-

Connect VAG1551 scan tool (VAG1552). Then switch ignition on and select the Engine Control Module (ECM) using address word 01.

Connecting scan tool and selecting ECM.  Refer to " Scan Tool Testing/Scan Tool Connecting and Initial Checks " See: Testing and Inspection 

Display will indicate the control module identification and the coding, e.g.:

022906032C MOTRONIC ME7.1 G V003

Press the Print key on the Scan Tool (ST) to print out the control module identification.

-

Press the -> button.

-

Press buttons -0- and -6- to select "End Output" function 06. Press -Q- button to confirm input.

-

Switch ignition off.

-

Disconnect battery.

-

Disengage connector from control module and disconnect it.

Installing

-

Insert the new control module into the bracket.

-

Install connector from control module and engage.

-

Reconnect battery.

-

Check old coding and code new control module.

-

Adapt new control module to the electronic anti-theft immobilizer:

-

Adapt new control module to throttle valve control module.

-

In vehicles with cruise control: Check whether this function is enabled. If "G" does not appear in control module identification, activate cruise
control.

-

Read readiness code. If DTC memory was erased or Engine Control Module (ECM) was disconnected from continuous B+ supply, readiness code
must be re-generated.

Vehicles with automatic transmission:

-

Adapt kick-down shift point

-

Adapt Transmission Control Module -J217-:

-

Perform idle test.

-

Check DTC memory, repair any malfunctions and then erase DTC memory.

-

Read readiness code. If DTC memory was erased or the Engine Control Module (ECM) was disconnected from the continuous B+ supply, the
readiness code must be re-generated.

Procedure Following Interruption of Voltage Supply

If voltage supply has been interrupted or DTC memory has been erased, the Engine Control Module (ECM) "forgets" all adaptation and basic setting
values. This can cause significant driveability problems for the vehicle depending on vehicle mileage.

Special tools and equipment

-

VAG1551 scan tool (or VAG1552 mobile scan tool) with VAG1551/3B cable

Procedure

Perform the following steps after an interruption in the voltage supply.

-

Switch on ignition for at least 10 seconds.

-

Then switch ignition off.

-

Adapt Engine Control Module (ECM) to throttle valve control module.

-

Perform idle test.

NOTE:  During the idle test, the EVAP valve and the A/C system are turned off and adaptation is performed for oxygen sensor control.
