Engine Control Module With Anti-Theft Immobilizer

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

-

Electric knife V. A. G 1561 A with saw set V. A. G 1561/14

-

Hot air gun from wiring harness repair kit VAS 1978

-

Vehicle diagnosis tester for example vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051 B (not illustrated)

Locking pliers

-

Protective gloves

NOTE:  If the engine control module is to be replaced, connect the vehicle diagnostic tester and perform "Guided Function, Replacing Engine Control
Module".

Removing

-

Switch off ignition.

-

Remove wiper arms and plenum chamber cove.

-

Remove plenum chamber bulkhead.

NOTE:  Thread of shear bolts is equipped with locking compound. By heating the shear bolts using the hot air gun, the inhibition effect of the
locking compound is lowered.

CAUTION:  Cover the wires, the harness connectors and the control modules in close vicinity of Engine Control Module (ECM) to
prevent damage from burning.

Set hot air gun - 4 - as shown:

Turn potentiometer for temperature adjustment - 2 - to maximum heat output (600 degree C).

Move two stage switch for air quantity - 3 - to position 3.

CAUTION:  By heating the shear bolts, parts of the protective housing are heated intensely. Wear protective gloves to prevent injuries.

Guide nozzle of hot air gun on to shear bolts.

-

Switch on hot air pistol and heat shear bolt for approximately 20 to 25 seconds.

Remove shear bolt using pliers on bolt head.

The procedure for second shear bolt is exactly the same.
