The two trailing arms are connected together by means of a cross member consisting of two spring steel leaves welded together to form a T shape. Gusset plates between cross member and trailing arms increase the strength of the axle. Vehicles with the 81 kW engine also have an antir-roll bar.

As in the case of the front axle the coil springs are divided into several load groups and shock absorbers are available in normal and heavy duty versions. Axle beam and spring struts are connected to the body via rubber bushes.

Difference in the Jetta rear axle.

The shock absorbers were taken over unchanged from the Golf. To improve support for the buffer at the upper end, they were fitted with a dust cap which has now also been introduced on the Golf.

All vehicles are fitted with an anti-roll bar (18 mm dia. for vehicles with 1.3 and 1.5 litre engine and 20.5 mm dia. for vehicles with 1.6 and 1.8 litre engine (GTI).

The bonded rubber bushes for the rear axle brackets have a greater shore hardness =>Page 42-13 for Caddy rear axle.
