Checking breather and vent valve for function and leaks
Checking breather and vent valve for function and leaks
–  Remove air filter.
–  Check hose from air filter to throttle valve positioner vent valve -N97-.
–  Pull connector and vacuum lines from throttle valve positioner -V60-.

–  Connect vacuum tester -V.A.G 1368- with hand-operated vacuum pump with accessories -V.A.G 1390/- to lower throttle valve positioner breather valve -N117- vacuum connection.
–  Switch ignition on.
–  Check voltage with hand-held multimeter -V.A.G 1526C- and auxiliary measuring set -V.A.G 1594C- at connector contacts 1 and 2 or engine earth.
  V22-1544
Specification: Battery voltage approx. 12 V.
If the specification is not attained:
–  Rectify open circuit according to → current flow diagram or check Ecotronic control unit -J184- → Chapter, quick Ecotronic function test.
–  Switch off ignition.
  Note
t  If no earth is present at connector contact 1, pick-up earth directly from engine.
t  Only connect and disconnect test leads with ignition switched off.
  V22-1535
–  Use auxiliary measuring set -V.A.G 1594C- to connect lead from connector (contacts 1 + 2) to throttle valve positioner -V60- (contacts 1+2) (supply throttle valve positioner breather valve -N117- with voltage).
–  Switch ignition on.
–  Check resistance at contacts 3 and 5 of throttle valve positioner -V60- with hand-held multimeter -V.A.G 1526C- and auxiliary measuring set -V.A.G 1594C-.
–  At the same time, use hand-operated vacuum pump with accessories -V.A.G 1390/- to generate vacuum until hand-held multimeter -V.A.G 1526C- shows 500…700 Ω. Operating rod of throttle valve positioner -V60- must not be fully retracted in this case.
  Note
If operating rod is retracted fully (overrun position), a vacuum of at least 250 mbar must be generated.
–  Switch off ignition.
–  Pull vacuum tester -V.A.G 1368- vacuum hose from throttle valve positioner breather valve -N117- and leave connection free.
–  Observe resistance value on hand-held multimeter -V.A.G 1526C-. Displayed value may rise by max. 200 Ω in 1 minute.
If the specification is not attained:
–  Renew throttle valve positioner -V60- (throttle valve positioner breather valve -N117- leaking).
–  Switch ignition on and observe resistance value on hand-held multimeter -V.A.G 1526C-. Displayed value max rise by max. 650 Ω in 5 seconds.
If the specification is not attained:
–  Remove and check non-return valve, renew if necessary.
–  Again connect vacuum hose to breather valve connection and, if necessary, generate vacuum until hand-held multimeter -V.A.G 1526C- shows 500…700 Ω.
–  Switch off ignition.
  V22-1536
–  Use auxiliary measuring set -V.A.G 1594C- to connect lead from connector to throttle valve positioner -V60- (contacts 1 + 6 and 2 + 7) (supply throttle valve positioner vent valve -N97- with voltage).
–  Switch ignition on. At the same time, operating rod must be fully extended in max. 1 second.
If operating rod extends too slowly or not at all:
–  Check vacuum connection and filter for throttle valve positioner vent valve -N97- for continuity; if necessary, renew filter or throttle valve positioner -V60- → Chapter.
