Dismantling and assembling final drive > < Checking oil in final drive

Removing and installing oil seal for drive flange
Removing and installing oil seal for drive flange

(Gearbox installed)

  • ‒ Unbolt drive shaft from drive flange.

When replacing right-hand oil seal:

  • ‒ Remove balance weight.
  • ‒ Lay drive shaft to one side and secure.

When replacing left-hand oil seal:

  • ‒ → Mark ball joint/wishbone securing bolts installation position and
    • ‒ Remove bolts (arrow A),
    • ‒ Loosen bolt (arrow B).
  • ‒ Turn steering to right lock.
  • ‒ Swing ball joint out and place left-hand drive shaft to one side.
 
V39-1411
  • ‒ → Mount fitting tool and remove circlip.
 
V39-1802
  • ‒ → Pull off drive flange with VW 391.
  • ‒ Pull out drive flange oil seal with VW 681.
 
N39-0061
  • ‒ → Pull new oil seal in onto stop with press piece 3319, M10 threaded rod (approx. 80 mm long) and nut with washer.
  • ‒ Fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with multi-purpose grease.
 
V39-1411
  • ‒ Insert drive flange, dished washer and circlip.
  • ‒ → Pull drive flange in.

Note:

Drive flange can also be pulled in with VW 391.

  • ‒ Install circlip and seal drive flange with cover.
  • ‒ Install drive shaft.
  • ‒ Reconnect ball joint to wishbone.
  • ‒ With gearbox installed, check final drive oil level .

Tightening torque:

Drive shaft to drive flange

45 Nm

Ball joint to wishbone

35 Nm
