Connecting fault reader
All functions that you previously carried out with the fault reader -V.A.G 1551- or the vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- can also be carried out with the new Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051- in the vehicle self-diagnosis mode.
Vehicles ► 08.94
Test prerequisites:
t  All fuses according to current flow diagram OK.
t  Battery voltage OK (at least 9 V).
With ignition switched off, connect fault reader -V.A.G 1551- to the diagnosis connector using the diagnostic cable -V.A.G 1551/1- as follows:
–  Unclip cover for diagnosis connections under the heating/ventilation controls.
   
–  First connect the black plug on the -V.A.G 1551/1- to the black diagnosis connector in the vehicle (voltage supply).

t  Is displayed alternately.
  Note
If the display remains blank, do not connect the white plug! If this is the case, check the voltage supply for the fault reader -V.A.G 1551- according to current flow diagram.

2-Flash code output                      
–  Connect the white plug on the fault reader -V.A.G 1551- to the white diagnosis connector in the vehicle. The blue plug is not required.
Vehicles 09.94 ►
Test prerequisites:
t  All fuses according to current flow diagram OK.
t  Battery voltage at least 9 V.

–  Remove ashtray and push cover for diagnostic connector to the left -arrow-
–  With ignition switched off, connect fault reader -V.A.G 1551- with the diagnostic cable -V.A.G 1551/3-.

t  Display will show the actual software version installed (will be shown briefly in display)

  Note
t  If the display remains blank, check fault reader -V.A.G 1551- voltage supply according to current flow diagram → ”Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations”
t  Additional operating information can be printed out depending on the programme by pressing the HELP key on the -V.A.G 1551-.
t  The key is used for advancing the programme sequence.
t  The PRINT key is used for switching on the printer (warning lamp in key lights up).
With the address word 00 the automatic test sequence is carried out, i.e. the fault memories of all systems in the vehicle capable of self-diagnosis are interrogated via the rapid data transfer.
