• ‒ First check whether a coded radio is fitted. If this is the case obtain the anti-theft coding.
• ‒ The engine is removed forwards together with the gearbox.
• ‒ With the ignition switched off disconnect the battery earth strap.

Note:

All cable ties that have been released or cut-open when removing the engine are to be reinstated at the same location when reinstalling engine.

• ‒ Drain coolant .
• ‒ Remove lock carrier with attachments:

=> General body repairs; Repair group 50; Body, front; Removing and installing lock carrier with attachments.

Vehicles with air conditioner:

• ‒ Observe additional information and removal instructions => Page 10-10 .

• ‒ Disconnect selector mechanism from gearbox.

=> 5-Speed manual gearbox 02A; Repair group 34; Servicing selector mechanism

• ‒ Remove hydraulic clutch slave cylinder:

=> 5-Speed manual gearbox 02A; Repair group 30; Servicing clutch release mechanism

• ‒ Remove power assisted steering reservoir and lay to side.
• ‒ Remove power assisted steering vane pump with bracket and lay to side; hoses remain connected.

• ‒ → Attach lifting tackle 2024 A with bracket 3180 as follows and lift slightly with workshop crane:

     Pulley end:
     4th hole in hook at position 1

     Flywheel end:
     1st hole in hook at position 7

Notes:

• ◆ The positions marked 1...4 on the bar must be towards the pulley end.
• ◆ The holes in the hooks are counted up from the hook.

• ‒ Remove engine carrier and lift assembly out forwards.

Note:

When lifting out the assembly must be carefully guided, to prevent damage to the bodywork.

When working on the engine, it should be secured to the engine stand using the engine bracket VW 540.
