Notes on removing
Notes on removing
–  The engine is removed forwards together with the gearbox.
–  With ignition switched off, disconnect battery earth strap.
  Note
Obtain radio unit anti-theft coding first if necessary.
–  All cable ties which are opened or cut through when engine is removed must be replaced in the same position when engine is installed.
–  Drain coolant → Chapter.
–  Remove lock carrier with add-on parts → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. Gr.50.
Vehicles with air conditioning system:
–  Observe additional information and installation work → Chapter.
–  Remove power-assisted steering reservoir and lay to side.
–  Remove power-assisted steering vane pump with bracket and lay to side; hoses remain connected → Running gear; Rep. Gr.48
Vehicles with manual gearbox
Version with clutch cable:
–  Disconnect clutch cable → 5-speed manual gearbox 020; Rep. Gr.30.
Version with hydraulic clutch:
–  Remove hydraulic clutch slave cylinder → 5-speed manual gearbox 02C; Rep. Gr.30.
All versions:
   
–  Attach lifting tackle -2024 A- as follows and lift slightly with workshop crane:
Pulley end: 2nd hole in hook rail at position 1
Flywheel end: 2nd hole of hook rail in position 7
  WARNING
The hooks and locating pins must be secured with locking pins.
  Note
t  The positions marked 1…4 on the bar must be towards the pulley end.
t  The holes in the hook rails are counted up from the hook.
Vehicles with automatic gearbox and vehicles with four-wheel drive
–  Remove poly V-belt → Chapter.
–  Remove belt pulley/vibration damper of crankshaft and coolant pump pulley.

–  Attach lifting tackle -2024 A- as follows and lift slightly with workshop crane:
Belt pulley end: 4th hole in hook rail at position 1
Flywheel end: 2nd hole of hook rail in position 6
  WARNING
The hooks and locating pins must be secured with locking pins.
  Note
t  The positions marked 1…4 on the bar must be towards the pulley end.
t  The holes in the hook rails are counted up from the hook.
Continuation for all vehicles
–  Remove engine carrier and lift assembly out forwards.
  Note
When lifted out, the assembly must be carefully guided to prevent damage to the bodywork.
Before carrying out repair work, secure engine on assembly stand with engine and gearbox support -VW 540-.
