Servicing wheel bearings - drum brakes (front wheel drive vehicles)

Notes:

Careful sealing, absolute cleanliness and precise adjustment are prerequisites for long wheel bearing service life. Therefore note the following points:

  • ◆ Install oil seal and grease cap as shown.
  • ◆ Only reinstall clean bearings, do not wash bearings.
  • ◆ Adjust wheel bearing play carefully.
  • Stub axle
    • ◆ Straightening operations are not permitted!

  • Brake backplate
    • ◆ Bolt together with stub axle onto rear axle
  • Dished washer
    • ◆ Larger contact surface (concave side) to brake backplate
  • Hexagon bolt, 60 Nm
  • Stub axle for vehicles with ABS
    • ◆ Straightening operations are not permitted!
  • Cover ring for vehicles with ABS
    • ◆ Driving in => Fig.10
  • Oil seal
    • ◆ Fill between sealing lips with multi-purpose grease.

    • ◆ When removing the brake drum ensure that the outer wheel bearing does not fall out.
    • ◆ Fill hub with multi-purpose grease before installing

    • ◆ Drive out outer race with copper drift

Notes:

  • ◆ Always renew damaged (dented) grease caps.
  • ◆ Damaged (dented) grease caps allow ingress of moisture, therefore always use the illustrated tool.

Using a screwdriver it must be possible to move the thrust washer by finger pressure (without leverage).

  • ‒ Secure with locking ring and new split pin.
