Renewing camshaft oil seal

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	Oil seal extractor -2085-

t	Counterhold tool -3415-

t	Assembly tool -T10071-

t	Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-

t	Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-

Removing –  Remove toothed belt guard - upper part.

–  Set camshaft toothed belt pulley to TDC No. 1 cylinder by turning crankshaft. Mark on camshaft sprocket must align with -arrow- on toothed belt guard. –  Release tensioning roller and remove toothed belt from camshaft sprocket. –  Turn crankshaft back slightly.

–  Remove camshaft sprocket. When loosening camshaft sprocket, hold with counterhold tool -3415-. –  Remove woodruff key from camshaft. –  Screw camshaft sprocket securing bolt fully into camshaft. –  Screw inner part of oil seal extractor -2085- two turns (approx. 3 mm) out of outer part and lock using knurled screw.

–  Lubricate threaded head of oil seal extractor -2085-, place it in position and exerting firm pressure, screw it as far as possible into oil seal. –  Loosen knurled screw and turn inner part against camshaft until the oil seal is pulled out. –  Clamp flats of oil seal extractor in vice. Remove oil seal with pliers. Installing Condition l  The pistons must not be positioned at TDC.

–  Position seal using assembly tool -T10071- and press in onto stop using press sleeve -T10071/1- and bolt -T10071/2-. –  Insert Woodruff key in camshaft.

–  Install camshaft sprocket. When tightening camshaft sprocket bolt, hold with counterhold tool -3415-. Torque setting: 100 Nm.   Note When camshaft is turned, crankshaft must not be at TDC. Danger of damage to valves and piston crowns. Further assembly is basically the reverse of the dismantling procedure. Installing toothed belt and adjusting valve timing → Chapter.
