Removing and installing sump
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Hand drill with plastic brush attachment
t  Flat scraper
t  Silicone sealant -D 176 404 A2-
Removing
–  Install centre, left and right sound insulation tray → Rep. Gr.50.
–  Drain engine oil.
–  Remove sump securing bolts.
–  Loosen oil sump with light blows of a rubber headed hammer if necessary.
–  Remove sealant residue on cylinder block with a flat scraper.

–  Remove sealant residue on sump with a rotating brush, e.g. an electric drill with plastic brush attachment (wear eye protection).
–  Clean sealing surfaces. They must be free of oil and grease.
Installing
  Note
t  Observe the use-by date of the sealing compound.
t  The sump must be installed within 5 minutes of applying silicone sealing compound.
  N17-0012
–  Cut off tube nozzle at forward marking (approx. 3 mm nozzle Ø).
–  Apply silicone sealant -D 176 404 A2-, as shown, to clean sump sealing surface. Sealant bead must be:
t  2…3 mm thick.
t  Run bead along inner side of bolt holes -arrows-.
  Note
The sealing compound bead must not be thicker. Otherwise excess sealing compound will enter the sump and can block the oil suction line strainer.
  N17-0019
–  Apply silicone sealant -D 176 404 A2- as shown in figure to clean sealing surface of sump. (The figure shows the position of the sealant bead on the cylinder block.)
–  Install sump immediately and tighten all sump bolts lightly.
  Note
The sump must be flush with cylinder block.
–  Tighten oil sump bolts to 15 Nm.
–  Tighten sump/gearbox bolts to 45 Nm.
  Note
Let sealing compound dry for approx. 30 minutes after installing oil sump. Only then fill with engine oil.
Further assembly is basically the reverse of the dismantling procedure.
