Checking function of thermostat
–  Remove map-controlled engine cooling thermostat -F265-.
  Note
t  Draining coolant → Chapter.
t  Always renew seals and gaskets.
t  Filling coolant → Chapter.
   
–  Check map-controlled engine cooling system thermostat -F265- when cold: the large valve plate must seal against connecting flange all around.
If this is not the case
–  Renew map-controlled engine cooling thermostat -F265-.

–  Connect contacts of map-controlled engine cooling thermostat -F265- to battery using auxiliary cables from auxiliary measuring set -V.A.G 1594A- or auxiliary measuring set -V.A.G 1594C-. Using pliers, carefully place thermostat vertically, up to flange, in pot of boiling coolant (mixture ratio: 50% G12).
  WARNING
Do not touch metal parts of thermostats, as they heat up.
The heating resistor now also heats the wax in the thermostat.

–  Observe whether the minimum lift of 7 mm -arrows- is attained after 10 minutes.
If lift of 7 mm is attained
–  Disconnect voltage supply from battery.
  Note
This test must not be conducted in air. Damage to the expansion element may occur!
If the minimum lift is not obtained
–  Renew map-controlled engine cooling thermostat -F265-.
–  Finally, clear fault memory of engine control unit as removing the connector causes a fault to be saved → Rep. Gr.01.
