Renewing valve stem seals
Renewing valve stem seals
(with cylinder head installed)
   
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331- (5...50 Nm)
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332- (40...200 Nm)
t  Spark plug spanner -3122 B-
t  Valve stem seal puller -3364-
t  Pressure hose -VW 653/3-
t  Valve spring tool -3362-

   
t  Valve stem seal fitting tool -3365-
Removing
–  Remove camshafts → Chapter.
–  Remove bucket tappets and place them with the contact surface downwards. When doing this, ensure that tappets are not interchanged.
–  Remove spark plugs using spark plug spanner -3122 B-.
–  Set piston of respective cylinder to “bottom dead centre”.

–  Screw pressure hose -VW 653/3- into spark plug thread.
–  Insert thrust piece -3362/1- into hold down tool for valve springs -3362-.
–  Mount hold down tool for valve springs -3362- on cylinder head with the tool's own securing bolts.
–  Bring hold down tool for valve springs into following positions:
Outer inlet valve: lower position
Middle inlet valve: upper position
Exhaust valve: lower position
–  Connect pressure hose -VW 653/3- to compressed air system supplying at least 6 bar and remove valve springs.

–  Pull valve stem seals off using valve stem seal puller -3364-.
Installing
  A15-0035
–  To prevent damage to new valve stem seals, place plastic sleeve -A- on valve stem.
–  Oil valve stem seal -B-, place it in valve stem seal fitting tool -3365- and push carefully onto valve guide.
Further assembly is basically the reverse of the dismantling procedure.
