  Caution
The crankshaft must not be removed. Just loosening the main bearing caps will cause deformation of the cylinder block bearing pedestals. This deformation will cause a reduction of the bearing clearance. Even if the bearing shells are not renewed bearing damage could occur due to a different bearing clearance.
If the bearing cap bolts are loosened, the cylinder block must be renewed complete with the crankshaft.
Measuring the main bearing clearance is not possible with normal workshop equipment.
  Note
Repairing clutch → Repairing clutch; Rep. gr.30.
   
1 - Securing bolt
q   Observe tightening procedure → Chapter.
q   Renew.
q   Contact surface for securing bolt must be free of oil and grease.
q   Oil threads before inserting.
q   Secure pulley against turning with counterhold 3415.
q   The turning further angle can be measured with a commercial protractor.
2 - Belt pulley
q   Contact surfaces must be free of oil and grease.
q   Secure against turning with counterhold 3415 when removing and installing.
q   Removing and installing poly V-belt → Chapter.
3 - Seal
q   Renew.
4 - Bearing bush
q   Contact surfaces must be free of oil and grease.
5 - O-ring
q   Renew.
6 - Aluminium cylinder block
7 - 60 Nm + turn 90° further
q   Renew.
8 - Flywheel/drive plate
q   When removing and installing flywheel, lock with counterhold -T10044-.
9 - Intermediate plate
q   Must seat on dowel sleeves.
q   Do not damage or bend when assembling.
10 - 12 Nm
q   Renew.
11 - Sealing flange with sender wheel and oil seal
  Note
t  Different sealing flanges are installed.
t  Please note the distinguishing features of the crankshaft sealing flange at the flywheel end and assembly device -T10017- and -T10134- → Chapter.
t  Renew sealing flange complete with oil seal and sender wheel only.
t  Renewing crankshaft sealing flange at flywheel end (assembly tool -T10134-) → Chapter.
t  Renewing crankshaft sealing flange at flywheel end (assembly tool -T10017-) → Chapter.
t  Renewing crankshaft sealing flange at flywheel end (Eos) → Chapter.
q   With engine speed sender -G28- (not illustrated).
q   Specified torque for engine speed sender -G28-: 5 Nm.
q   Removing and installing engine speed sender -G28- → Chapter.
