Removing
   
–  Remove securing bolts -1- from engine cover panel.
–  Detach coolant hoses -2- at engine cover panel and pull engine cover panel upwards.
–  Remove engine splash protection.
–  Remove front right wheel housing liner → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.66.
–  Mark the direction of rotation of the poly V-belt and remove belt → Chapter.
–  Turn crankshaft in direction of engine rotation to TDC for no. 1 cylinder → Chapter.
–  Remove coolant pump pulley → Chapter.
Vehicles from model year 2009 ►
–  Remove banjo bolt from oil supply pipe to turbocharger.
Continuation for all vehicles
–  Remove air conditioner compressor from bracket with refrigerant lines still connected → Heating, air conditioning; Rep. gr.87.
–  Remove ancillary bracket.
–  Remove alternator.
Scirocco
  N15-10372
–  Install support device -10 - 222 A- with adapter -10 - 222 A /8- as shown and hook into lifting eye.
–  Position adapter -10 - 222 A /8- on vehicle front end -arrows- as shown.
All vehicles

–  Install support device -10 - 222 A- with adapter -10 - 222 A /8- as shown and hook into lifting eye.

–  Take up weight of engine and remove securing bolts -arrows-.
–  Remove sump → Chapter.
  N10-0443
–  Now remove pulley securing bolt. Hold pulley with counterhold tools -3415- and -3415/1-.

–  Remove bracket -1- by undoing the bolts -arrows-.
  N13-10446
–  Remove Allen head bolts for timing housing and hexagon bolts indicated by -arrows-.
–  Remove valve timing housing.
  Note
Note that crankshaft bearing bush remains in sealing flange.
