Topping up gear oil in bevel box Conditions l  Bevel box must be in installation position. Perform the following steps:

–  Unbolt heat shield for right drive shaft from bevel box -arrows-. –  Use adapter for oil filling -VAS 6291- for refilling:

–  Route hose of adapter for oil filling -VAS 6291- through engine compartment.   Note

Cover area beneath oil filler plug -arrow- with a cloth. –  Remove oil filler plug -arrow- from bevel box.

–  Disconnect adapter -VAS 6291/3--A- from elbow -B-. –  Screw adapter -VAS 6291/3--A- in to stop. –  Engage elbow -B- in adapter-A-.

–  Ensure that valve -arrow- is closed. –  Screw oil reservoir -A- onto adapter for oil filling -VAS 6291-. l  Hose must not sag. –  Open valve -arrow- and hold oil reservoir as shown in figure. Bevel box will now be filled. –  Raise vehicle after a few minutes.   Note t  If bevel box has been properly filled, oil will have run out at adapter-A-.

t  If no oil has run out, lower vehicle and perform filling procedure again. –  Raise vehicle. –  If oil has run out at adapter -A-, place oil reservoir aside (e.g. on workshop trolley). Part of the excess oil will run back into the oil reservoir.

–  When no more oil flows back, remove filler device. To do this, press catch in -direction of arrow-. (Shown here on adapter -VAS 6291/2-.)   Note Note that there is still oil in the hose of the adapter for oil filling -VAS 6291-. –  Unscrew adapter.

–  Screw in new oil filler plug -arrow-. –  Tighten bolt for oil filler hole to specified torque → Chapter. l  If oil should get on bevel box and other components, carefully remove it.

–  Attach heat shield for right drive shaft to bevel box -arrows- and tighten to specified torque → Chapter. –  Install noise insulation → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50.
