Renewing oil seals for flange shafts (rear final drive 0BR)
Renewing oil seals for flange shafts (rear final drive 0BR)
Removing flange shaft oil seal
Perform the following steps:
Seal, right:
–  Remove rear final drive → Chapter.
Seal, left:
–  Remove drive shaft → Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr.42.
Continuation for both sides:
   
–  Bolt plate -A- of extractor -T10037- to flange hand-tight using 2 M8 x 30 bolts -1-.
The shoulders -arrows- for greater flange diameters face outwards.

–  Tighten bolts alternately one turn each until flange contacts plate -arrows-, but no further! Do not tighten further!
  WARNING
Wear protective gloves and hold flange securely.

Drive flange out of final drive by striking the plate -arrow- gently.
  Caution
To avoid damage to the final drive and the tools, use only a plastic-headed mallet.

–  Lever out flange shaft oil seal using oil seal extractor -VW 681-.
Installing flange shaft oil seal
  A39-10056
–  Lightly oil new seal around outside circumference and drive in to stop with thrust piece -T10049-, taking care not to cant seal.
–  Half-fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with sealing grease -G 052 128 A1-.
Renewing retaining rings
  A39-10057
–  Clamp flange shaft in vice with protective jaw covers.
–  Use new retaining ring -A- to press old retaining ring out of groove in flange shaft.
–  Drive in flange shaft using plastic mallet and, if necessary, a drift.
–  Install drive shaft → Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr.42.
–  Install rear final drive → Chapter.
–  Checking gear oil level in rear final drive → Chapter.
