Removing and installing camshaft oil seal   Note

t  A modified oil seal is gradually being introduced. t  The „old version“ of the oil seal -item A- forms a continuous surface between the camshaft and the cylinder head. t  The „new version“ of the oil seal -item B- forms a stepped surface between the camshaft and the cylinder head.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	Fitting sleeves -V.A.G 10-203-

t	Oil seal extractor -3240-

t	Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331/-

t	Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332/-

t	Use bolt M12 x 1.5 x 75 -10203-.

Puller -T10443- for „new version“ of oil seal »Carry out the following work sequence« Removing –  Take toothed belt off camshaft and high-pressure pump → Chapter. –  Remove camshaft pulley and hub → Chapter. „Old version“ of oil seal:

–  Insert thrust piece -3240/1- into camshaft. –  Unscrew inner part of oil seal extractor -3240- 2 turns (approx. 3 mm) from the outer part and lock in position with the knurled screw.

–  Lubricate threaded head of oil seal extractor, place it in position and, exerting firm pressure, screw it into oil seal as far as possible. –  Loosen knurled screw and turn inner part against camshaft until oil seal is pulled out. –  Clamp oil seal extractor on flats in a vice and remove oil seal using pliers.

„New version“ of oil seal:   Caution If unscrewed too far, the internal pressure plate of the puller -T10443- detaches from the pressure screw. In this case the pressure plate must be pressed back on to the pressure bolt. –  Carefully unscrew grub screw -arrow- of puller -T10443- until a slight resistance is felt.

–  Position puller -T10443- such that it is straight, as shown in illustration, and lock by screwing grub screw -A- in. –  Screw in pressure bolt -B- until seal is extracted. Installing –  Clean contact surface and sealing surface.   Note The oil seal sealing lip must not be additionally oiled or greased. –  Remove oil residue from camshaft journal using a clean cloth.

–  Fit guide sleeve -10-203- onto camshaft as shown in illustration. –  Carefully slide oil seal -1- over guide sleeve onto camshaft.

–  Press seal in onto stop using thrust piece from fitting tool 10-203 and M12x1.5x75 bolt. –  Install camshaft pulley and hub → Chapter. –  Install toothed belt and adjust valve timing → Chapter.
