Radiator Cooling Fan Temperature Sensor / Switch: Testing and Inspection
FAN MOTOR
1.
Disconnect fan motor electrical connector.
2.
Apply battery voltage to motor.
3.
Fan should operate. If not, replace motor as required.
THERMOSWITCH
1.
Connect ohmmeter to thermoswitch terminals, then immerse sensor in water.
2.
Heat water. Continuity should exist at the following temperatures:
a. Except Vanagon and Quantum models, 200-208 degrees F.
b. On Vanagon models and Quantum models equipped with turbo diesel engine; first stage fan, 199-208 degrees F; second stage fan, 210-221
degrees F.
3.
Cool water while checking ohmmeter. Thermoswitch should be open at the following temperatures:
a. Except Vanagon and Quantum 190-200 degrees F.
b. On Quantum models with Turbo Diesel engine; first stage fan, 183-198 degrees F; second stage fan, 196-208 degrees F.
c. On Vanagon Models; first stage fan, 190-199 degrees F; second stage fan, 196-206 degrees F.
4.
If continuity is not as specified, replace thermoswitch.
