Brake Pad: Service and Repair

BRAKE PADS, REPLACE
1.
Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheels.
2.
Remove anti-rattle springs and two caliper guide pins, Fig. 3.
3.
Swing caliper outward and remove from support. Wire caliper to frame.
4.
Remove brake pads from caliper support.
5.
Install new brake pads into caliper support. Inner pad has chamfered edges.
6.
Using tool 1023-4 or equivalent, push caliper piston completely into bore.
7.
Position caliper over pads, install guide pins and torque to 30 ft. lbs.
CALIPER, REPLACE
1.
Remove anti-rattle springs and two caliper guide pins.
2.
Swing caliper outward and remove from support.
3.
Disconnect brake line from caliper, then caliper from vehicle.
4.
Reverse procedure to install and bleed brake system.
CALIPER OVERHAUL
1.
Remove caliper as outlined previously.
2.
Pry piston dust boot from piston assembly.
3.
Place folded rag into caliper assembly, then apply low pressure compressed air to fluid port and blow piston out of caliper.
4.
Using a plastic rod, pry piston seal out of caliper bore.
5.
Coat new piston seal and piston with brake cylinder paste, then install into caliper bore.
6.
Install dust boot onto piston assembly.
7.
Install caliper assembly, then bleed brake system.
