Valve: Adjustments

Valve Arrangement

E-I-E-I-I-E-I-E

1.

Adjust valves with engine warm (at least 35°C/95°F).

2.

Turn camshaft by pushing vehicle in 4th gear so that cam lobes of valve to be adjusted point upward. Do not turn camshaft by cam gear
mounting bolt.  This may over stress the belt and lead to premature failure.

3.

Check valve clearances with feeler gauge. Valve clearances should be:

Intake -- 0.20 - 0.30 mm (.008-.012 in.)
Exhaust -- 0.40 - 0.50 mm (.016-.020 in.)

4.

If measured valve clearance exceeds specifications, remove adjusting shim and install a thicker one.

5.

If measured valve clearance is less than specifications, remove adjusting shim and install a thinner one.

NOTE: When removing adjusting discs, pistons must not be at TDC. Turn crankshaft approximately 1/4 turn past TDC so that valves do not
contact pistons when cam followers are depressed.

6.

To remove adjusting disc, depress cam follower, then remove adjusting shim using shim removal pliers. Thickness of valve adjusting disc is
etched on one side. Install shim with markings facing down.
