Golf GTI L4-1781cc 1.8L SOHC (HT) (1985)
-
start engine, push gas pedal down once (over 3000/rpm), LED must go out. If LED goes out, test step 1 is complete.
-
if LED does not go out, connect jumper wire (2) to connector (1) and hold min. 3 sec. to (-) ground. Then continuous illumination of LED must
change to flashing.
Flashing 2x in intervals means:
Fault in knock sensor system:
^
incorrect torque 11 +/- N-m (8 +/- 0.75 ft. 16)
^
open circuit (check wiring diagram)
^
knock sensor defective
^
electronic ignition control unit defective
Flashing 3x in intervals means:
^
break in vacuum hose to electronic ignition control unit
^
electronic control unit defective
Test Step II, Ignition Timing - Advance
Note
The electronic ignition control unit has been planned for use in various models. In this equipment, different timing maps are recorded. The coding is
done with terminal 11 (being grounded in the connector).
Coding for engine codes:
HT = terminal 11 occupied and grounded RD = terminal 11 open
Test Stop I
Requirements
^
knock sensor OK
^
coding at terminal 11 correct
^
engine oil temp. minimum 80~C (176~F)
-
connect test equipment for ignition timing and RPM
WARNING
Ignition must be switched off when connecting ignition timing tester and RPM display.
-
start engine and let idle
-
note displayed ignition point base value
-
with engine running, pull vacuum hose off ignition control unit and increase speed
Engine codes:
HT - 4300/RPM RD - 3000/RPM
-
read ignition point and subtract base value calculated adjustment value must be:
