EGR Valve: Testing and Inspection

Requirements

No leaks at vacuum line connections
Vacuum lines not plugged or kinked
Engine oil temperature at least 50°C (122°F)

1.

Start the engine and let it idle.

2.

Remove the vacuum line to the EGR valve from the straight connection of the thermo-vacuum valve, Fig. 33.

3.

Connect a hand vacuum pump to the disconnected line and apply vacuum.  The idle should become erratic.

a. If the idle does not change, check the EGR line and the ports in the intake and exhaust manifolds for blockage and clean out or repair as

necessary.

b. If the ports and line are OK, replace the EGR valve.
