Ignition Hall Effect Sensor: Testing and Inspection

1.

With the ignition "OFF", disconnect the Motronic control unit harness connector. The Motronic control unit is located beneath the drip tray, at the
left rear (drivers side) of the engine compartment. 

2.

Disconnect the harness connector at the ignition distributor and bridge terminals 1 and 2.

3.

Connect a suitable volt/ohm meter between terminal 30 and 35 of the Motronic control unit harness connector, and measure the resistance.

Special Tools

CAUTION: Avoid damaging the delicate connectors within the control unit harness connector. A simple set of test leads can be fabricated using
flat connectors (part # VW N 17 457 2) or equivalent, and a pair of alligator clips.

The correct measurement should be 1 ohm or less (continuity).

Disconnect the bridge and the volt/ohm meter.

5.

Connect the bridge between terminal 2 and 3 of the ignition distributor harness connector.

6.

Connect the volt/ohm meter between terminal 30 and 21 of the Motronic control unit harness connector, and measure the resistance.

The correct measurement should be 1 ohm or less. If the results from test steps 2-6 are incorrect repair or replace the damaged wiring harness,
refer to CHASSIS ELECTRICAL DIAGRAMS. If the results from test steps 2-6 are correct continue.

7.

Remove the bridge and the volt/ohm meter along with any test leads used.

8.

Reconnect the ignition distributor harness connector.

9.

With the ignition "OFF" reconnect the Motronic control unit harness connector.

Testing The Hall Sender

10.

Peel back the rubber boot on the ignition distributor harness connector.

11.

Connect a high impedance LED test light between the positive battery terminal and the center terminal of the ignition distributor connector.

12.

Disconnect the high tension ignition lead from the distributor cap and ground it.

13.

With the ignition switch, crank the engine.

The LED test light should flicker. If the light does not flicker the Hall sender or the harness connection is defective.

If the results from the previous test are correct check the operation of the air flow sensor plate. Refer to FUEL SYSTEMS for operation and
testing procedures.
