Poor Air Distribution to Floor Vents / Air Distribution Knob Binding

CONDITION

Customer complains of poor air distribution to the floor vents and/or the HVAC air distribution knob is stiff to operate in the floor-only or bi-level
positions. The stiffness in the distribution knob operation will be apparent whether or not the blower motor is running. This condition is most likely
caused by an improper mesh of the distribution flap gears, which are indexed to ensure proper coordination of the flap movement with the distribution
knob setting.

NOTE:

If the air distribution knob is difficult to move to or from the dash vent setting only when the blower is on 3rd or 4th speed with the dash vents
closed, air pressure is being trapped against the distribution flap. Advise the customer to open a dash vent or switch to a slower fan speed if this
occurs.

PRODUCTION

No Change.

SERVICE

-

Remove center console.

-

Remove right side floor vent elbow and dashboard reinforcement plate.

-

Look at the underside of the indicated gear set.

The drive gear for the distribution flap has one extended tooth which must mesh with a notch in the actuating arm when the gears are properly
synchronized.

If the gears are not synchronized, remove the retaining screw from the bottom of the actuating arm and slide the arm off just enough to disengage the
teeth from the drive gear for the flap. Realign the gears so the extended tooth engages the notch in the arm and slide the arm back into place, then
reinstall the retaining screw.

With fresh air blower off, operate the air distribution knob while checking for proper gear mesh and smooth operation. Then check for smooth
operation and proper air distribution with the fresh air blower running.

Reinstall dashboard reinforcement plate, right side floor vent elbow, and console.
