Servicing

Axles With CV Type Inner Joint

NOTE:

-

Axle shafts for Plus suspension have shorter, finer splines on the outer constant velocity joint than those for Base suspension.

-

A 12-point nut secures the wheel bearing on Plus suspension.

-

The splines of the outer joint and wheel hub are coated with sealant, Part No. D 185 400 A2, or equivalent.

-

Grease quantity for constant velocity joints (grease Part No. G 6.3), or equivalent:

-

Outer: 110 grams (55 grams in joint, 55 grams in boot)

-

Inner: 120 grams (60 grams pressed into joint from both sides, 60 grams in boot)

Circlip

Always replace

-

Remove/install with tool No. VW 161a, or equivalent

Gasket

Always replace

Pull off protective backing and adhere to joint

-

Only for 100 mm diameter constant velocity joint -3-

Only for 90 mm diameter constant velocity joint from 8/93

Replace complete part only

Installed position: outer diameter (concave side) faces constant velocity joint

With vent hole

Check for tears and chafing

Coat inside of boot with D3
