Valve Cover: Service and Repair

TO REMOVE AND INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD COVER:

Cylinder Head & Related Components, Exploded View

1. Remove the intake air boot from the throttle housing.
2. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle body.
3. Disconnect all hoses and electrical connectors from the upper intake manifold.
4. On cars with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), disconnect the pipe from the EGR valve beneath the intake manifold.
5. Remove the upper intake manifold mounting bolts (item 3.) and manifold support bracket. Carefully separate the upper manifold (item 4.) from the

lower manifold. Cover the open intake runners using clean shop rags.

6. Disconnect the crankcase breather valve (item 1.) from the cylinder head cover.
.7 Remove the nuts (item 7.) and the reinforcing strips (item 9.) from the cover. 
.8 Unclip and remove the upper camshaft drive belt cover (item 21.). Remove the small dust shield (item 22.) from the back of the sprocket.
.9. Lift off the cylinder head cover (item 8.) and its gasket. Remove the one-piece gasket (item 12.) from the cylinder head or cover.

10. Installation is the reverse of removal. Be sure to use a new gasket (item 5.) at the intake manifold.

Tightening Torques:

Cylinder head cover to cylinder head:  10 Nm (89 in-b).
Upper intake manifold to lower manifold:  20 Nm (15 ft-lb).
