Camshaft Oil Seal: Service and Repair
Camshaft Seal
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
‹› Pulling fixture (10 - 203)
‹› Seal remover (3240)
‹› Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)
‹› Torque wrench (V.A.G 1332)
‹› Bolt (M12•1,5 x 65)
Removing

Remove toothed belt --> [ Toothed Belt ] See: Timing Components/Timing Belt/Service and Repair/Toothed Belt.

Remove the camshaft sprocket and the hub --> [ Camshaft ] See: Camshaft, Lifters and Push Rods/Camshaft/Service and Repair.

Turn the inner portion of the seal remover (3240) two revolutions (approximately 3 mm) out from the outer portion and lock it with the knurled
bolt.

Lubricate threaded head of seal extractor (3240), place against seal, and with strong force screw into the seal as far as possible.

Loosen knurled bolt and turn inner part against camshaft until seal is removed.
Installing
‹› The sealing lip of the sealing ring may not be additionally oiled or greased.

Before installing, remove oil remains from camshaft journal with a clean cloth.

Cover groove on cone of camshaft with standard adhesive tape (e.g. Tesafilm).

Carefully set seal onto camshaft.

Press the seal in up to the stop using the thrust piece of the oil seal driver (10 - 203) and bolt (M12 x 1.5 x 65).
