Power Steering Pump: Service and Repair
Power Steering Pump Replace
1.
Raise and support vehicle.
2.
Remove right front wheel.
3.
Disconnect pressure, return, and feed hoses at pump.
4.
Drain and discard power steering fluid.
5.
Remove power steering belt by removing three power steering pulley attaching bolts, noting location of shims.
6.
Remove power steering pump.
7.
Using tools VW402 and VW411 or equivalents, press pulley hub from old pump.
8.
Secure hub in vise with protective jaw covers.
9.
Insert shaft of replacement pump into hub.
10.
Using 3/8-16 bolt and heavy washer, pull hub onto shaft by tightening bolt until face of hub is level with face of shaft.
11.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. With pump installed in vehicle, assemble pulley halves, shims, and fan belt onto hub and hand tighten nuts. Shims should be installed in
position noted in removal.
b. Using center hex in pump shaft, rotate pulley at least one complete turn.
c. Torque nut closest to crankshaft pulley to 13 ft. lbs., rotate pulley 1/3 turn and torque nut closest to crankshaft pulley to 13 ft. lbs., and again
rotate pulley 1/3 turn and torque final nut to 13 ft. lbs.
d. Rotate pulley at least three turns to ensure that fan belt turns freely.
e. Torque nuts to 13 ft. lbs.
