Fuel Pump Relay: Testing and Inspection
VIN. Prefix WVW (German Production)

Vehicles Produced Prior to Jan. 1989

1.

Disconnect the Digifant II control unit harness connector.

2.

Remove fuse S5 (fuel pump) at the fuse box.

Relay Location

3.

Remove the fuel pump relay.

4.

With a fused jumper, bridge terminals 3 and 13 of the control unit harness connector and turn the ignition switch "ON".

5.

Measure the voltage at the terminals of the fuse box which correspond to terminal 30 and 86 of the fuel pump relay.

The correct measurement should be battery voltage.

If the correct measurement is not obtained, repair the power supply to the fuel pump relay. Refer to CHASSIS ELECTRICAL DIAGRAMS.

6.

With the ignition "OFF", reinstall the fuel pump relay, allowing enough clearance to probe the terminals.

7.

Turn the ignition "ON", and measure the voltage at terminal 87 of the fuel pump relay.

The correct measurement should be battery voltage.

If the correct measurement is not obtained, verify that the circuit to ground from terminal 85 of the fuel pump relay has continuity (less than 0.5
ohms resistance).
If the circuit is OK replace the fuel pump relay.

Vehicles Produced From Jan. 1989

1.

Disconnect the Digifant II control unit harness connector.

2.

Remove fuse 18 (fuel pump) at the fuse box.

3.

Remove the fuel pump relay.

4.

With a fused jumper, bridge terminals 3 and 13 of the control unit harness connector and turn the ignition switch "ON".
