Engine Control Module: Service and Repair
Engine Control Module (ECM), Replacing

Special tools and equipment required

-

Scan tool VAG 1551 with cable VAG 1551/3

Work sequence

-

First print out the control module identification and thereby the previous control module coding as follows:

-

Connect the scan tool VAG 1551 (VAG 1552). Then switch ignition on and select engine control module with the "Address word" 01.

Display indicates control module identification number and coding, e.g.:

06A906032CM 1.8L R4/5VT G 0001

->

Coding 06530

WSC 00000

-

Print out the control module identification by pressing the scan tool print button.

-

Press the -> key.

-

Press keys 0 and 6 for the "End data transfer" function and confirm input with the Q key.

Indicated on display:

Rapid data transfer

HELP

Select function XX

-

Switch off ignition.

-

Remove windshield wiper arms and the cover for plenum chamber:

-

Release connector from control module and pull off.

-

Press control module to the right and pull out.

-

Insert new control module and press to the left.

-

Check the previous coding and the coding of the new control module. See: Engine Control Module (ECM), Coding

Match new control module to throttle valve control module. See: Adjustments/Throttle Valve Control Module, Adapting to ECM 

-

On vehicles with cruise control system: Check whether this function has been enabled (activated). If "G" is not evident in the control module
identification, activate the cruise control system. Refer to "VAG 1551 Scan Tool" See: Computers and Control Systems/Testing and

Vehicles with automatic transmission:

-

Learning kick-down point See: Adjustments/Kick-Down Position, Learning  

-

Adapt control module for automatic transmission:

Continued for all vehicles

-

Then subsequently interrogate the fault memory of the new engine control module and erase the fault memory if necessary.

Perform idling check See: Fuel Delivery and Air Induction/Idle Speed/Testing and Inspection
