Timing Belt: Adjustments

For 1997 and later models: 

1997 and latter models use a Thermo Tension Roller to maintain proper belt tension at all engine temperatures.
This tensioner set up requires special adjustment procedures.
These special procedures can be found at Timing Belt Tensioner, Service and Repair.  

For 1996 and earlier models:

1. Remove accessories, drive belts and timing belt covers necessary to access timing belt and tensioner.

NOTE:  It must be possible to twist drive belt by 90° with thumb and forefinger half-way between camshaft and intermediate shaft drive belt
sprockets.

2. Increase tension on drive belt by turning tensioner pulley with spanner wrench in direction of arrow.
3. Tighten lock nut on belt tensioner to: 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.).
4. Turn crankshaft though two complete revolutions.
5. Check belt tension.
6. Check alignment of ignition distributor rotor with markings on distributor housing.
7. Install upper drive belt guard.
8. Install tensioner for poly-ribbed belt, then tighten to: 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
9. Install poly-ribbed drive belt.
