CONDITION

A malfunctioning Knock Sensor circuit can cause Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 00524 to be stored in the ECM memory.

The DTC Table on page 01-14 of Repair Manual, Golf III/ GTI/ Jetta III/ Cabrio, W42 011 294 106 gives the impression that for each of the three
possible causes of DTC 00524, only one possible correction exists. That is not the intention of the table.

SERVICE

Use the following procedure to eliminate DTC 00524:

-

Connect 1551 Scan Tool (ST) (see Repair Manual, Golf III /GTI III / Jetta III/ Cabrio, W42 011 294 106.)

Check for DTC 00524

-

Erase stored DTC.

-

Test drive vehicle.

Check DTC memory again, if 00524 is stored, continue with the following procedure.

-

Check Knock sensor torque (incorrect tightening torque affects Knock sensor operation). Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft lb) if necessary.

Check wiring (see page 01-46, test step 23.)

-

Correct wiring if necessary.

-

Inspect and clean electrical contacts between the Knock sensor connector and harness connector.

-

Apply electrical contact enhancer (see Technical Bulletin 97-94-02.)

-

Test drive vehicle and check for any stored DTC. If DTC 00524 still exists, then replace Knock sensor G61 (see Repair Group 28.)

If after completing the above suggestions the DTC 00524 still exists, contact the Technician's Helpline, prior to replacing the ECM.
