Supersedes T.B. 28-94-02 dated Nov. 30, 1994.   The following contains additional information and will be updated at the next Repair Manual printing.

Camshaft Position Sensor, checking

Camshaft position sensor malfunctions are recognized by On Board Diagnostic (OBD).

-

Perform electrical testing, test step 21, Repair Group 01.

-

Disconnect harness connector on Camshaft Position Sensor at ignition distributor.

-

Connect Fluke 83 multimeter with jumper wires from VW 1 594 adapter kit to measure voltage across outer terminals of connector.

-

Switch On ignition.  Specified values:

Up to 10.93 production, 49 states: 10 Volts min.

Up to 10.93 production, California: 5 Volts min.

^

From 10.93 production, all vehicles: 5 Volts min.

Verify that ignition distributor rotor and distributor housing alignment are correct. Refer to Repair Manual pages 28-8 through 28-12 for alignment
procedure.

Note:

This procedure is extremely critical! Assure that all timing marks are in correct relationship as described in the Repair Manual.

If OK:

-

Replace distributor.

If not OK:

-

Replace Motronic Engine Control Module (J220).
