Centering the Steering Wheel on Airbag Equipped Vehicles

Golf III / Jetta III From 1994 M.Y.

CONDITION

Customer complains that the steering wheel is slightly off-center to the right or to the left when driving straight on a level surface.

PRODUCTION

Additional checking procedures implemented during the alignment process including audible go-no-go indicators.

SERVICE

-

Remove airbag module from steering wheel, FOLLOWING ALL RECOMMENDED SAFETY PROCEDURES.

Remove the three screws which secure the spiral spring assembly to the steering wheel. Attempting to remove the wheel with these screws in place
will cause damage to the spring assembly.

Unplug the horn connection and remove the steering wheel retaining nut.

The spiral spring assembly MUST remain in place on the column and not attempt to slide off with the steering wheel. Ensure this by reaching behind
the steering wheel to hold the spiral spring assembly in place as you slide the steering wheel off with the other hand.

Slide the wheel off just far enough to clear the steering shaft splines, and turn it the appropriate number of teeth to correct the original offset
condition.

Turn the spiral spring assembly to align the retaining screw holes as you slide the steering wheel back onto the shaft. Do not turn the wheel until all
attachments are complete (the steering wheel retaining nut disengages a locking pawl on the spiral spring assembly).

Reinstall the steering wheel retaining nut, the spiral spring retaining screws, and the horn wire connection.

-

Reinstall airbag module.

-

Road test the vehicle to verify the repair.
