Air Bag Control Module: Service and Repair
Removal and Installation

NOTE:  From 09.94 the airbag control module -J234- and the mounting bracket have been changed. This has also resulted in a change to the
wiring harness from 11.94.

REMOVAL 

-

Remove center console.

-

Remove footwell air vent.

WARNING:  Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap before disconnecting the airbag control module. 

Up to Production Date 08.94

Temic control module: Part No. 701 909 603 D

^

Mounting bracket (MST): Part No. 1H0 959657

-

Move connector lock -2- to position shown and disconnect connector -3- from control module -1-.

Remove three tamper-proof Torx@ screws -4-, using Snap-On®FXTR 30 socket or equivalent, and remove airbag control module -1-.

Tightening torque (screws (-4-): 10 Nm (7 ft lb)

If necessary, remove nuts and bracket from studs. 
^

Tightening torque (nuts): 20 Nm (15 ft lb) 

Installation 

-

Installation is the reverse order of removal.

CAUTION:
^

From 11.94, the control module wiring harness (Part No. 1HO 971581 B) has been changed to eliminate the brown ground wire.

^

The Temic control module needs the ground wire-the Siemens control module does not.

^

Only the Siemens control module and the wiring harness without the ground wire will be supplied as replacement parts. Both wiring harnesses,
with and without the ground wire, carry the same part number.

If a Siemens control module is installed in a vehicle equipped with the Temic control module, the wiring harness does NOT have to be
replaced.
