Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

‹› Torque wrench 5-50 Nm (VAG 1331)

CAUTION!
Always replace the intermediate shaft sprocket. Otherwise the backlash will not adjust itself and it could result in engine damage. The
new intermediate shaft sprocket has an anti-friction coating that wears off after a short period of use, which automatically adjusts the
backlash.

Removing

-

Remove the coolant pump toothed belt. Refer to --> [ Coolant Pump Toothed Belt ] See: Water Pump/Service and Repair/Coolant Pump Toothed
Belt.

Remove upper timing chain cover. Refer to --> [ Upper Timing Chain Cover ] See: Timing Components/Timing Cover/Service and Repair/Upper
Timing Chain Cover.

Remove the lower timing chain cover. Refer to--> [ Lower Timing Chain Cover ] See: Timing Components/Timing Cover/Service and
Repair/Lower Timing Chain Cover.

Remove the camshaft timing chain. Refer to --> [ Camshaft Timing Chain ] See: Timing Components/Timing Chain/Service and Repair/Camshaft
Timing Chain.

Remove the balance shaft timing chain. Refer to --> [ Balance Shaft Timing Chain ] See: Balance Shaft Chain/Service and Repair/Balance Shaft
Timing Chain.

Remove the intermediate shaft sprocket bolt - 1 - and sprocket.

Remove the intake side balance shaft bolt - 2 - and shaft.
