Drive Axle 12 Point Bolt, Loosening and Tightening

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

‹› Socket 24 mm (T10361)

‹› Angle wrench (VAG 1756)

Wheel bearings must not be burdened when the drive axle connection is loose.

If the bearings are loaded by the vehicle's own weight the wheel bearing will be damaged. The wheel bearings will be stressed and the life expectancy
reduced. Therefore observe the following:

Vehicles without a drive axle must not be moved, otherwise the wheel bearing will be damaged. If the vehicle does have to be moved, always note the
following points:

Install an outer joint in place of the drive axle.

Tighten the outer joint to 120 Nm.

Loosening

-

With the vehicle resting on its wheels, loosen the bolt using (T10361) a maximum of 90°, otherwise, the wheel bearing will be damaged.

Raise the vehicle enough that the wheels hang freely.

-

Press the brake pedal (second mechanic required).

-

Remove the bolt - arrow -.

Tightening

-

Replace the bolt.

‹› The wheels may not yet touch the ground for tightening the drive axle, otherwise the wheel bearing may be pre-damaged.

-

Press the brake pedal (second mechanic required).

-

Tighten the bolt to 70 Nm.

-

Lower the vehicle onto its wheels.

-

Tighten the bolt an additional 90°.
