Removing the roof liner tensioning system for New Beetle convertible (1203)

Removing
–  Remove rear bulkhead trim panel → General body repairs, interior; Rep. Gr.70.
   
–  Remove the two rivets -1- and release guide -2- from frame -3- and from pendulum guide -4-.
  Note
t  If the guide is scratched, damaged or shows plastic shavings replace it.
t  Observe installation position of cable sockets -5- and take care not to damage them while removing rivet.

–  Drill out the three rivets -1- from the frame and release cord shoes and pendulum guides -2-.
  Note
t  Note installation position of cords.
t  Note installation position of pendulum guides -2- on lower cord ends.
t  If necessary use a punch to drive out rivets.

–  To remove the retaining plate with cord -1- from the reinforcing plate -2- in liner, start at the bottom -arrow- and unclip the retaining clips -3- from the retaining plate using a suitable screwdriver.
–  Release pendulum guide -4- from reinforcing plate -2- on liner.

–  Untie both cords -1- from the retaining plate with cords and separate them from the lower, middle and upper relays and from the trim hand-holds -arrows- (upper relay and upper liner hand-hold are not shown in this illustration).
  Note
t  When using a new retaining plate with cords, cut through cords to ease procedure.
t  Note installation position of cords with retaining plate with cords, relays and roof liner hand-holds.

–  Press the securing clips -1- inwards towards the convertible roof liner.
–  Remove roof leading edge trim → Chapter

–  Unscrew retaining screw and pull out strap with retaining plate in -direction of arrow-.
