Airbag units following an accident, replacing

From 08/03 vehicles for US market are equipped with an "Advanced Airbag System" on both the driver and passenger side . In certain impacts involving
New Beetle Sedans or Convertibles with Advanced Airbags, it is possible, that only the first stage in the passenger's side deploys. If only the first stage
deploys, the second stage will be able to deploy, if an electrical signal is sent to the airbag control unit. The Advanced Airbag on the driver side will
deploy completely in every impact in which this is triggered.
 
WARNING! Front Advanced Airbags on the passenger side of a New Beetle Sedan or Convertible, that have only deployed the first stage, can

cause serious personal injury if the second stage deploys inadvertently.
Always carefully follow safety instructions when working on airbag systems or handling aibag units that have not deployed or
heve not deployed completely.

 
At the time of printing, there is no way to tell for sure, if the second stage of one front Advanced Airbags on the passenger side of a New Beetle Sedan or
Convertible has been deployed. For that reason, always send this kind of airbag units back to the importer in an airbag unit transportation container and
carefully follow all storage and transportation requirements regarding explosives.

WARNING! Never throw front Advanced Airbag units for the passenger side of a New Beetle Sedan or Convertible in the trash or in with

other materials that are to be scrapped

Points to recognize vehicles with "Advance Airbag System":

1. Front Passenger Airbag Disabled Indicator Lamp -K145- -1- on center console.
2. Warning label on the back of the passengers sun visor

a) Vehicles with "Advanced Airbag System"
b) Vehicles without "Advanced Airbag System"

Accident involving activation of airbag

Always exchange following:

All deployed airbag units along with control modules and sensors 

-

Support for front passenger's module 

-

Return spring with slip ring 

-

All seat belts with triggered seat belt tensioners 

-

In addition following must be replaced if necessary (visual check): All damaged components/items
