Constant Velocity Joint: Testing and Inspection
Outer Constant Velocity Joint, Checking
Outer Constant Velocity (CV) Joint, Checking
The joint can be disassembled to replace dirty grease or for checking the balls and ball tracks for wear and damage.
Removing
-
Before disassembling, mark position of ball hub in relation to ball cage and housing using electric scribe or oil stone.

Swivel ball hub and ball cage.
-
Remove balls one after another.
-
Turn cage until two rectangular openings (arrow) are aligned with joint housing.

Lift out cage together with hub.
-
Swing segment of hub into rectangular opening of cage.

Tilt hub out of cage.

The 6 balls of each joint belong to one tolerance group. Check stub axle, hub, cage and balls for small indentations (pitting) and signs of seizure.
Note:
-
Excessive backlash in the joint will be noticed as a knock when changing from acceleration to deceleration or vice versa. Replace the joint if
necessary. Polished areas and ball track marks are not reasons for replacing the joint.
Installing
-
Press half of total amount of grease (40 grams or 1.4 oz.) into joint body.

Install cage together with hub in joint housing.
-
Press in balls separately from alternate sides and make sure that original alignment of hub to cage to joint housing is restored.

Install new circlip in hub.
-
Distribute remaining grease in CV joint boot.
