Interrogating fault memory > < Test prerequisites for self-diagnosis
Connecting fault readerV.A.G 1551 and selecting function
Connecting fault reader -V.A.G 1551- and selecting function
  Note
t  The airbag system is switched off during self-diagnosis.
t  The fault memory can only be erased on successful completion of repair and interrogation.
With ignition switched off, connect fault reader -V.A.G 1551- with lead -V.A.G 1551/3- to diagnosis connector as follows:
–  Unclip cover for diagnosis connection on right next to ignition switch.
   
–  With ignition switched off, connect fault reader -V.A.G 1551- using diagnosis lead -V.A.G 1551/3-.

Indicated on display:
t  Display will show actual software version installed (shown briefly on display)
  Note
t  If nothing is shown in the display, check voltage supply of fault reader -V.A.G 1551- using current flow diagram → ”Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations”
t  Depending on the program, additional operating instructions can be printed out by pressing the HELP key on fault reader -V.A.G 1551-.
t  The key is used for advancing the programme sequence.
t  The PRINT key is used for switching on the printer (warning lamp in key lights up).
and then following is indicated on display:

–  Switch on ignition.
–  Press key -1- for operating mode “Rapid data transfer”.

–  Press keys -1- and -5- (the address word of the vehicle system to be tested “Airbag” is entered with 15).

–  Confirm entry with Q key.
and then the display shows e.g.:

The control unit identification number is displayed:

t  If one of the fault messages opposite appears in the display, the possible causes of the fault can be printed out with the HELP key.

Control unit not responding!            
t  (The ignition must be switched on!)

K wire not switching to positive!     
t  Faults have occurred at the start of or during the program (external cause of malfunction?).

No signal from control unit!            
t  Check diagnosis leads, voltage supply and earth connection.
–  After rectifying the possible causes of the fault, once again enter the address word 15 for “Airbag” and confirm with the Q key.

Fault in communication build-up
Indicated in display after entering the address word 15:
and then following is indicated on display:
 
Rapid data transfer
Tester sends the address word 15
Control unit identification number is displayed.
–  Press key.

Only the functions listed can at present be used for self-diagnosis.
When the key is pressed, the fault reader -V.A.G 1551- program will return to the start position.
