Connecting fault reader V.A.G 1551 and selecting engine electronics control unit

Special tools, testers, measuring instruments and auxiliary items required

  • ◆ Fault reader V.A.G 1551 with cable V.A.G 1551/3

Note:

The vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552 can be used instead of the fault reader V.A.G 1551, however a print-out is not possible.

Test conditions

  • ● Battery voltage OK.

  • ● Fuse 22 OK.
  • ● Earth connections on engine and gearbox OK.

Work sequence

  • ‒ → Unclip cover for diagnostic connections.
  • ‒ Connect fault reader V.A.G 1551 with cable V.A.G 1551/3.
 
→ Indicated on display:
V.A.G - Self-diagnosis     HELP
1 - Rapid data transfer*
2 - Flash code output*

* Appears alternately

Note:

If the display remains blank:

=> Fault reader operating instructions

  • ‒ Depending upon desired function:
    Switch on ignition
         or
    Start engine.
  • ‒ Operate fault reader taking into account the information on the display:
  • ‒ Input 1 for "Rapid data transfer".
  • ‒ Input 01 for address word "Engine electronics" and confirm with Q.
 
→ The fault reader V.A.G 1551 display will show the control unit identification, e.g.:
028906021C     1.9 ltr.     R4     EDC     D40      ⇒
Coding 0000     WSC0000
  • ◆ 028906021C = Part No. of the control unit (for up-to-date control unit versions see parts catalogue)
  • ◆ 1.9 ltr. = Engine capacity
  • ◆ R4 = Type of engine (4 Cyl. in-line engine)
  • ◆ EDC = Injection system (Electronic Diesel Control)
  • ◆ D40 = Control unit software version
  • ◆ Coding 00000 coding variant
  • ◆ WSC...Dealership number of the V.A.G dealer
  • ‒ Press ⇒ key.
