Remove left side axle shaft protective plate (arrows) if part of original equipment. Third bolt cannot be seen in illustration.

Disconnect axle shaft from flange shaft.

Vehicles with 8-cyl. injection engine

Remove left axle shaft.

Continuation for all vehicles 

-

Place drip tray underneath.

-

Remove securing bolt -A- for flange shaft -B-.

-

Remove flange shaft.

-

Pull out flange shaft oil seal -C- using VW 681.

-

Remove speedometer sensor.

-

Remove speedometer drive wheel -D- from grooves of differential by prying at connecting tabs (arrows) alternating sides.

Installing 

Installation is performed in the reverse sequence. Note the following:
Installed position:

Drive wheel -D- connecting tabs (arrows) engage in grooves of differential.

Drive in flange shaft oil seal -C- and install flange shaft.
