Brake Pressure Regulator: Adjustments
Brake pressure regulator is mounted on body, and operated by a spring attached to the rear axle.
Check with vehicle empty, fuel tank full and a driver in vehicle.
1.
Firmly depress brake pedal once, with car on the ground.
2.
Release pedal suddenly and ensure lever on pressure regulator moves.
3.
Raise and support vehicle.
4.
Remove bleeder screw on right front caliper and connect gauge US 1016 or equivalent.
5.
Remove bleeder screw on left rear wheel cylinder or caliper and connect gauge US 1016 or equivalent.
6.
Bleed both hoses and gauges with bleeding screws on gauges, then lower vehicle and bounce rear of vehicle several times.
7.
Depress brake pedal until gauge of right front caliper reads 725 psi. Gauge of left rear wheel cylinder or caliper must read as follows:
a. 391-478 psi on Corrado, 435-522 psi on Passat.
b. 392-479 psi on Fox Wagon, and 537-609 on Fox Coupe and Sedan.
8.
Increase pressure to brake pedal until gauge of right front caliper reads 1450 psi. Gauge of left rear wheel cylinder or caliper must read as follows:
a. 696-783 psi on Corrado, 740-827 psi on Passat.
b. 754-841 psi on Fox Wagon, and 725-958 psi on Fox Coupe and Sedan.
9.
Release brake pedal.
10.
On all models except Fox Coupe and Sedan, if pressure is too high, decrease spring tension on regulator, then recheck.
11.
If pressure is too low, increase spring tension on regulator, then recheck.
12.
Do not adjust pressure regulator with brake pedal depressed.
13.
If pressure cannot be adjusted, replace pressure regulator.
14.
On Fox Coupe and Sedan models, if readings are not within specifications, replace proportioning valves.
15.
On all models, disconnect pressure gauges and bleed brakes as described previously.
