Camshaft Drive Belt Tensioning

Model(s):
All with 16 valve engine

As outlined in Technical Bulletin Group 15, 92-01 dated January 31, 1992, Volkswagen has added checking, adjusting and eventual replacement of the
camshaft drive belt to the maintenance schedules of VW vehicles equipped with 16 valve engines.

The maintenance schedule specifies that the camshaft drive belt be checked and adjusted at the 15,000 mi. (24,000 Km), and 30,000 mi. (48,000 Km)
service intervals.

There is no adjustment required at the 45,000 mi. (72,000 Km) maintenance.

At the 60,000 mi. (96,000 Km) maintenance, the timing belt must be replaced.

Thereafter, the maintenance schedule repeats.

To check the camshaft drive belt tension:

Remove upper cover for camshaft drive belt

-

Rotate crankshaft (by turning crankshaft pulley) two revolutions in engine running direction and inspect cam belt for damage.

^ Replace if damaged

Attach belt tension gauge VW210 to cam drive belt as shown scale value must be between 13 and 14

If cam drive belt is not properly tensioned, 

-

Loosen tensioning wheel retaining bolt

-

Tension belt using tensioning wrench (e.g. Matra V159) in direction of arrow

-

Tighten tensioning wheel retaining bolt

^ 45 N-m (33 lb.ft.)

-

Rotate crankshaft (by turning crankshaft pulley) two revolutions in engine running direction and re-check tension, adjust as necessary

Install upper cover for cam belt
